The ideaLab and the Amazing Photo Dept at the Denver Post

Denver Post ideaLabber and photog R.J. Sangosti, along with his colleague Eric Lutzens and their boss Tim Rasmussen, showed me today how they have figured out how to use the iPad to post to any site within minutes from remote locations.

Using very high quality cameras – much more capable than Flipcams and iPhone cams – they can shoot pix and videos; edit, infotag, write cutlines and post to a site within minutes. Amazing quality and extremely fast.

They demonstrated by asking me to discuss our Project Thunderdome. Shot, edited and posted within minutes. See the link below.

The ideaLab and Denver Post photogs – a great combination.

  1. Looks great! I’m very excited to be a part of Digital First … when will technology/training/equipment to do the same type of high-quality video that can be shared instantly come to the smaller dailies within the company?

  2. Hmmm…. If you don’t have QuickTime installed on your machine, you cannot view the video. Great that they can upload quickly, but if not everyone can watch it, what’s the point?

  3. Among others I’m sure, the newspaper up in in Boulder has been doing this for well more than a year with great success. Good to see the Denver Post catching up.

  4. Using Filterstorm and an iPad camera connector kit, I’m guessing. Works great. We’ve been doing this for over 18 months now at the Salt Lake Tribune. It works great, and if you have a $40 eye-fi memory card you can transmit your photos wirelessly to the iPad. Very cool.

  5. Makes me wonder if we could use Ipad for live video?
We currently use Brightcove streaming services for live streaming of video to news sites.
It’s so bulky though when videographer has to carry laptop and camera.
Thinking live video can be done using ipad which has Adobe Media Encoder App and Internet connection. Noticing their are a bunch of inexpensive ipad tripods on the market.

If there is no adobe media encoder for ipad/phone available, could also look for App for PC based tablets. Would like to hear other ideas….Can talk about quality and possible revenue avenues.
